Join Alison in her garden studio set in a green leafy valley near Honiton, East Devon. The ceramic workshop is located in well heated, renovated outbuildings with separate studios for ceramics, jewellery, a dark room for photography and a sewing room. Some off-road parking is available.

This is a rolling six week ceramic classes for all abilities, on Tuesday mornings from 10am-12.30pm with a maximum of five students per class, fulfilling not only social distancing requirements but also enabling a more personal teaching experience.

This course introduces a variety of ceramic hand-building techniques using different types of clay, and the chance to experiment with various methods of decoration. It is an opportunity to get creative, learn new skills and experience the seductive tactility of playing with clay in a relaxed studio space.

Over six weeks you will be introduced to a range of ceramic hand-building methods, including pinch pots, slab building and coiling. A number of decorative processes will be explored including intaglio, coloured slip techniques and glazing at both earthenware and stoneware temperatures.

If you are a beginner it is expected that in six weeks you will have created at least three objects which will be fired during or after the course has been completed. If you are more experienced with clay, this is the chance to broaden your learning into perhaps mould-making and slip-casting, be more experimental or specialise in a particular technique, but most of all, to enjoy the creative studio setting with new friends.

This is part of a rolling six week programme that can be adapted as students learning skills evolve and interests develop.

What to bring?

Ceramics is a messy business so wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty (aprons are provided).

What is provided?

Two and a half hours of expert studio tuition per week. All tools, materials and firings are included to make at least three pieces over six weeks. If you have your own favourite tools bring them, along with your creative ideas for making. Depending on ambition there may be an extra charge for materials and firings.

Refreshments will be available.

Combewater Studios also runs other creative courses that you might be interested in.
