Joan Eardley at the Hunterian Art Gallery
Last week was spent moving family members to Edinburgh for the start of the new academic year. What I wasn't expecting was for my sister in Glasgow to have an afternoon off work while I was in Scotland, so I caught the train over and we visited the Hunterian Art Gallery together. I was thrilled to be able to get up close with more of Joan Eardley's wonderful drawings and paintings. She is one of my favourite artists. I love her intuitive line and drawing, loose and direct with such energy, delicate composition and subjects, describing a time in the life of Glasgow's inhabitants so effectively.
Seeing these pen and ink and pastel drawings reminds me to get sketching again. To look at things closely, interpret, re-imagine. The basic craft of an artist. Underneath the top right image is detailed pen and ink drawing which just peeps through the smothering on top of pink and green marks and bold brushstrokes.
